Negative Emotion Shrinks Willpower
Manage emotions more effectively to make focus easier - mini clip
How we respond to negative thoughts and feelings impacts our level of willpower
Recently I was working with a group of Cam Uni PhD & postdocs. Our aim was to help protect more hours for quality focus. As part of this project I asked what other skills participants would be keen to strengthen; willpower was the overwhelming number 1 request.
This makes sense, when we have an important task to complete willpower helps us get started and keep going until we reach the finish line.
Willpower also helps us create new habits and behaviours. It’s the bridge between ‘intention’ and ‘action’. I might intend to get fitter but willpower helps me get to the gym and do the workout.
I might intend to strengthen a relationship with someone I care about but willpower is how I find the energy to make the time even when I feel tired.
I might intend to make time for a quiet moment for me but willpower is how I give myself permission.
Today you can view a mini clip I’ve done on willpower here. Including; the impacts of procrastination, neuroscience of willpower and some reliable steps to manage negative emotions and increase willpower.
Keep expectations low, it’s a first take. Please let me know if you find it useful in any way by replying to this email.
